Do You Believe In Miracles?

OK … as much as I hate to Kevin credit for anything, reading his post on “Friday Night Lights” – it got me thinking.

First … how the hell could Kevin gone so long without getting hip to “Friday Night Lights”???? I mean really … I can think of (maybe) four other shows currently worth watching on TV … so how did you miss this gem??

Well, then Trip gave me the DVD of “We Are Marshall” (go out and rent this now!!) and then I caught “Glory Road” (who the hell knew it was a true story???).

So all this got me thinking; What are the greatest sports movies out there? I was able to break it down to three categories:

1) Miracle- the all time greatest moment in sports history! :-)

2) My twenty faves other that ‘Miracle”

3) Another twenty great flix:

All the categories are listed alphabetically, because I really was having a trouble listing an order based on merit. I love ‘em all. I’m sure I missed a few, so PLEASE feel free to enlighten me, and there are some (like “Hoop Dreams”) that I left off because I think documentaries should be a category all by themselves.

Fell free to pour yourself a pint & discuss!
Peace,
Scott

Not a bad list, but luckily I'm here to improve it for you. Get rid of obligatory movie snob pick Chariots of Fire (bore-ring), Talent For The Game (huh?), Tin Cup and Vision Quest (yeah, I know, I got it for Fiorentino too but the movie is slight).

Now, add Jerry Maguire, Heaven Can Wait, WHite Men Can't Jump and the most glaring omission, the fantastic One on One starring the teen actor turned novelist Robby Benson.

Lucky for both of you I'm available to provide the definitive word.
Keep Chariots of Fire -- some movies are actually good sans cute — and Vision Quest — but I agree getting rid of the craptacular Tin Cup. Add to the scrap heap Mystery,Alaska (unfunny and cotton candy-light), Searching For Bobby Fisher (good movie, but chess ain't a sport, dude) and I'll take Without Limits in the Steve Prefontaine derby.

Nice additions by Teek, esp. One on One.

I'll throw in:
The Bad News Bears — any flick with a stumbling drunk Matthau, the kid from Courtship of Eddie's Father and the late great Vic Morrow is aces in my book

Blue Chips — a memorable Knight-esque performance by Nick Nolte and another terrific scuzzball character courtesy of the late great J.T. Walsh

Coach Carter — Sam Jackson and a bunch o' good young actors who hoop with reality.

Cinderella Man — period and sentimental — but Russell Crowe killed it and I choked up

Invincible — Dude, Vince friggin' Papale! E-A-G-L-E-S! And the movie was good to boot.

Everybody's All-American — overlooked gem. One more classic sports movie and Dennis Quaid will becomes the undisputed champ.

And the one I cannot believe Satch and Teek both left off — considering their weakness for cuddly, romantic spritzer flicks:

Cutting Edge

OK … now we’re rolling!!!

<<…Chariots of Fire (bore-ring)…>>

Well, what can I say?? I liked it.

<<…Talent For The Game (huh?)…>>

Completely unbelievable … I know … but I thought Edward James Olmos was great … and, yes, it gets extra points for Lorraine Bracco.

<<…Tin Cup and Vision Quest (yeah, I know, I got it for Fiorentino too but the movie is slight)…>>

Well if we can’t get Fiorentino … can we sneak in a screening of “Personal Best”?

<<…Now, add Jerry Maguire…>>

I’d rather add “The Might Ducks”

<<… Heaven Can Wait….>>

Fair enough.

<<…White Men Can't Jump…>>

Maybe … but it’s been a while … maybe I need another viewing.

<<… and the most glaring omission, the fantastic One on One starring the teen actor turned novelist Robby Benson…>>

Novelist??? Really?? Anything [hopefully] better than his acting career?

<<…but I agree getting rid of the craptacular Tin Cup…>>

But it is Don Johnson’s crowning moment as an actor!!!

<<… Add to the scrap heap Mystery,Alaska (unfunny and cotton candy-light),…>>

No way … it stays. I love that flick.

<<… Searching For Bobby Fisher (good movie, but chess ain't a sport, dude)…>>

Whoever didn’t LOVE this movie … raise your hand … LIARS!!!

<<… and I'll take Without Limits in the Steve Prefontaine derby….>>

So would I … I listed the wrong track flick. What are the odds of that?

<<…I'll throw in:
The Bad News Bears — any flick with a stumbling drunk Matthau, the kid from Courtship of Eddie's Father and the late great Vic Morrow is aces in my book
…>>

Agreed.

<<…
Blue Chips — a memorable Knight-esque performance by Nick Nolte and another terrific scuzzball character courtesy of the late great J.T. Walsh
…>>

Damn … How’d I overlook that one?

<<…
Coach Carter — Sam Jackson and a bunch o' good young actors who hoop with reality….>>

Never saw it.

<<…

Cinderella Man — period and sentimental — but Russell Crowe killed it and I choked up…>>

Great flick.

<<…Invincible — Dude, Vince friggin' Papale! E-A-G-L-E-S! And the movie was good to boot…>>

Sorry … the way the Iggles are breaking my heart this year … I think I blacked out all green & white related flix.

<<…
Everybody's All-American — overlooked gem. One more classic sports movie and Dennis Quaid will becomes the undisputed champ….>>

Overlooked … or, my case … never seen. I’ll add to the “rental” list.

<<…
And the one I cannot believe Satch and Teek both left off — considering their weakness for cuddly, romantic spritzer flicks:

Cutting Edge…>>

I suck. Reeb … please forgive me.

I am SHOCKED that Cutting Edge did not make the original list...can we add the sequel (The Cutting Edge - Going for the Gold) or is that asking too much??
